Chelsea's Sturridge faces Team GB Olympics withdrawal in meningitis case

Wednesday 04 July 2012

Daniel Sturridge has been forced to pull out of Stuart Pearce's Team GB squad for the forthcoming London Olympics after possibly contracting meningitis, the Daily Mirror has reported. The Chelsea striker fell ill over the weekend and will undergo a series of tests to determine if viral meningitis is the cause.

Sturridge's condition is said to have improved over the last few days and a representative of the Meningitis Trust added that viral meningitis is the less serious form of the illness, although it can still cause severe symptoms including headaches, tiredness, nausea and a dislike of bright lights, amongst others. The best cure is to rest in hospital.

If the 22-year-old is forced out of Pearce's Olympics squad the manager has until July 25 to name a replacement, with Huddersfield Town's Scotland international Jordan Rhodes understood to be the most likely addition. Rhodes would be the only Scotland player in a squad dominated by English names.
