Vertonghen Tottenham move close says agent

Friday 06 July 2012

Accordin to agent, Nakhli Mondial, Jan Vertonghen’s transfer to Tottenham could finally be completed this week after weeks of stalling and contractual problems.

Reported by Sky Sports, Mondial claims that the Belgian defender can reach an agreement with Ajax allowing him to make his move from the Eredivisie to the Premier League.

He said: “We have a meeting with Ajax at the end of this morning to come to a solution. There is some movement and we have the intention to come to an agreement”

The deal has been hit by several bumps in the road, the most recent and biggest being a clause in the 25-year-old’s contract, which would allow him 15% of the transfer fee received from Spurs. But Ajax refused to pay out a fraction of the speculated £9.5 million, one reason seeming to be due to the player only having one year left on his deal.

If Vertonghen’s move is completed this week it will be the second piece of good news for Tottenham in a short space of time. After the dismissal of Harry Redknapp last month, Daniel Levy finally appointed a new manager on Monday in the form of Andre Villas-Boas. Meaning two long sagas will have come to an end for the North London side.

Vertonghen won the Eredivise player of the year last season and captained Ajax to the league title contributing 8 goals in 31 games from defense. He will be Villas-Boas’ second signing after the arrival of Gylfi Sigurdsson this week.
