Chelsea renew Modric interest as Lampard contract talks await

Sunday 08 July 2012

Chelsea have re-entered their chase for Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric, despite a series of offers last summer being turned down by Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, The Daily Mail reports.

Blues owner Roman Abramovich had three bids for the Croatian international rejected in the summer of 2011, but has not been disheartened and is hoping to twist Levy’s arm. Modric has been linked with a move to Real Madrid, but Chelsea are hoping to hijack the offer from their former boss Jose Mourinho. Andre Villas-Boas, another former Blues boss, is in charge at White Hart Lane and may look to frustrate the club which sacked him following just seven months in charge.

Modric could be seen as a replacement for Frank Lampard, with the England international into the final year of his contract and free to talk with other clubs in January. Chelsea boss Roberto di Matteo believes that Lampard has a long-term future at the club and wants the club to work out a new deal for the 34-year-old.

Di Matteo said: “Frank is a very fit man. As long as he doesn’t get injured, he can play for many years. He’s been very influential towards the end of the season. I don’t see any problems with him going on. The club will make the decision with Frank, but certainly he will be here next season.”
