Chelsea have Schurrle bid rejected

Chelsea’s attempts to further bolster their squad ahead of the new Premier League season have taken a blow after the Champions League winners had a £16m offer for Bayer Leverkusen’s Germany international Andre Schurrle rejected, Yahoo Sports has reported.

The Blues have already added Lille midfielder Eden Hazard and Schurrle’s national team colleague Marko Marin to their ranks but Schurrle, a forward, will not yet be joining them. Leverkusen’s chief executive, Wolfgang Holzhauser, is quoted as saying the offer from Chelsea was “very concrete”, adding that the club chose to keep the player rather than take the money - and that Schurrle is keen to stay with his current employers.

Schurrle has only spent one season with Leverkusen after leaving Mainz last summer. In two years with Mainz the 21-year-old made 68 appearances, scoring 20 goals, while last season at Leverkusen he featured in 40 games and was on the score sheet nine times. He was also part of Germany’s Euro 2012 squad and has seven international goals to his name from 16 caps.
