Chelsea move for Schurrle could push Sturridge out

Wednesday 11 July 2012

Chelsea could make a second offer for Bayer Leverkusen forward Andre Schurrle having seen their first bid rejected, the Daily Telegraph has reported, with the Champions League winners’ interest in the Germany international possibly spelling the end of Daniel Sturridge’s time at Stamford Bridge.

Roberto Di Matteo has seen a £17m offer for Schurrle turned down but the Telegraph believes a new bid could be forthcoming, worth around £20m. Schurrle is a long-time target of the Chelsea management, dating back to Andre Villas-Boas’ time in charge, when Di Matteo was assistant to the current Tottenham Hotspur Head Coach.

If Chelsea can tempt Leverkusen into selling the 21-year-old then Sturridge could be on the lookout for a new club. The Telegraph claims Di Matteo will have an abundance of forwards if Schurrle arrives, with Fernando Torres in the mix too, and Sturridge is known to have been unsettled last season at frequently playing as a winger rather than a central striker. Chelsea would also lean towards selling Sturridge as he would command a large fee to help offset the club’s spending this summer.
