Chelsea near to Oscar signing

Wednesday 11 July 2012

Chelsea are closing in on a big-money deal to sign Brazilian international Oscar after Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur backed away from their interest in the player, leaving the Champions League winners as the sole contenders for the signature of the Internacional midfielder, the Guardian has reported.

Tottenham had been chasing the 20-year-old but Chelsea moved into pole position to bring Oscar to England with a fee in the region of £22m expected for the player capped six times by Brazil. It is thought Spurs ended their interest in Oscar over the weekend when Chelsea’s grew stronger, with Roman Abramovich outbidding Tottenham for the player as he continues to re-shape manager Roberto Di Matteo’s playing squad.

Oscar is expected to slot into the 4-2-3-1 formation favoured by Di Matteo and is capable of playing either behind the lone striker or in one of the wider attacking roles, competing with the likes of Juan Mata and Florent Malouda and new signings Eden Hazard and Marko Marin for a starting role.
