Cech wants the right balance at Chelsea
Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech has revealed he wants to see the club’s manager, Roberto Di Matteo, strike the right balance between youth and experience, the Daily Mail has reported.
The Mail notes that last season Chelsea were criticised for their ageing squad amidst a struggle to remain competitive in the Premier League, eventually finishing off the pace in sixth. Yet that same squad won the Champions League, defeating Bayern Munich on penalties in Munich’s own Allianz Arena. The now departed Didier Drogba, 34, scored a late equaliser before converting the winning penalty.
Chelsea have been active in the transfer market already this summer, bringing in Lille playmaker Eden Hazard, Germany international Marko Marin and recalling Belgium winger Kevin de Bruyne from Genk, with Brazil midfielder Oscar expected to join them. Each player is under 23, lowering the club’s average age dramatically, while the release of Drogba, Salomon Kalou, 26, and Jose Bosingwa, 29, will add to the youthfulness around Stamford Bridge.
Cech, 30, said: “It is important for a team to have new players, young players and experienced players. I hope we find the right balance to go through the season and have success.”
