Chelsea have Willian offer rejected by Shakhtar

Wednesday 18 July 2012

Chelsea’s attempt to further add to their ranks ahead of the new Premier League season by signing Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Willian has taken a blow after the Brazilian’s club rejected their offer, ESPN has reported.

The Champions League winners are said to have made a bid of £26m for the playmaker, with Shakhtar Coach Mircea Lucescu claiming that the Ukrainians turned down the offer out of hand. Lucescu pointed to the £32m that Chelsea paid for Eden Hazard and claimed Willian was a better player than the Belgian, arguing that Chelsea had undervalued the market for players moving from Eastern Europe.

Willian has been in Donetsk for five years, moving to Ukraine from Corinthians in his native Brazil. During his time with Shakhtar Willian has made over 100 appearances, winning the Ukrainian Premier League title on three occasions - in 2008, 2010 and 2011 - and the Ukrainian Cup twice, in 2008 and 2011. Willian was also part of the Shakhtar side that clinched the UEFA Cup in 2009.
