Tottenham edging closer to Lloris deal

Friday 20 July 2012

Tottenham Hotspur are keen to step up their pursuit of Lyon goalkeeper Hugo Lloris as Andre Villas-Boas searches for a replacement for Brad Friedel, the Daily Mail has reported.

Spurs’ move for the France international had looked like grinding to a halt when Lyon put a £16m price tag on the head of the national team captain. But Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is said to be negotiating a £12m deal for the 25-year-old. Villas-Boas is thought to see Lloris as the long-term successor to Friedel.

Friedel, 41, joined Tottenham last summer on a free transfer from Aston Villa. The former United States international ousted Heurelho Gomes as Harry Redknapp’s No. 1 and was an ever-present in the Premier League. Friedel played in all 38 games and conceded 41 goals, only slightly more than a goal a game.

Arsenal were understood to be interested in Lloris but backed away earlier in the summer. The player’s fee and concerns over his suitability for English football were at the heart of Arsene Wenger’s change of mind.
