Ferguson believes Man Utd are favourites for Premier League title
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has claimed his side are favourites to win the Premier League title next season despite finishing as runners-up to Manchester City in the last campaign, ESPN has reported.
United and City finished level on points after 38 games, with Roberto Mancini’s side grabbing the trophy by an eight-goal margin. The destination of the title was decided on the final day of the season and for a short time, with United beating Sunderland and City drawing with and then losing to Queens Park Rangers, it appeared United would edge it at the last. A late Sergio Aguero goal however put City over the line in dramatic fashion.
Ferguson reasoned that in the past when United have failed to win the title they have come back stronger the following year. In this 20-year history of the Premier League United have rarely gone more than a season without finishing top of the table - only between 2003 and 2006 was that the case, when Arsenal and twice Chelsea ended as champions.
“People may say Manchester City are the team to beat but I don't agree,” Ferguson said, adding: “We are the team to beat because of the way we react and the way we have bounced back from losing the league in the past. We will be strong this season.”
