Man Utd's Carrick open to England return

Monday 23 July 2012

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has conceded that he would welcome the opportunity to play for England again, should it arise.

Reported by the Guardian, the 30-year-old has admitted that he asked not to be a part of this summer’s Euro 2012 squad after the hurt of being left on the sidelines at previous tournaments, but admits he wouldn’t turn down the chance to don the three lions again. He said:

I’ve had no contact from Roy Hodgson, so it would be wrong of me at this stage to make a decision either way. But I would consider it definitely,” adding: “I didn’t kick the door down and say ‘You’ve got to play me or I’ll leave’. It wasn’t a case of that at all. It was more that, if I wasn’t going to play, I’d rather not go.

Carrick has found himself stuck behind Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard when it comes to England duty and has been leapfrogged by Gareth Barry and Scott Parker, who both took first team positions after years of international exile over the past few seasons.

The former Tottenham Hotspur playmaker has featured 22 times at senior level for his country but has only played once at a tournament despite being picked for the last two World Cups. He was on Roy Hodgson’s stand-by list for the European Championships, but it was made clear that that was by request of Carrick who only wished to be chosen in an extreme case.
