Bale makes surprise Tottenham return

Wednesday 25 July 2012

Gareth Bale has caused a small media storm after he turned out for Tottenham against LA Galaxy on Wednesday despite pulling out of the Team GB squad due to injury.

Reported by the Daily Telegraph, the Welsh midfielder has upset those who rate him highly after he appeared to show a huge sign of disrespect to Stuart Pearce and co by playing for club after opting against representing his country.

The 22-year-old scored Spurs’ only goal of the night as they drew 1-1 in California and whilst Bale himself avoided the press after the game, his manager, Andre Villas-Boas, addressed the sudden return of player.

He said: “[Bale] came back to us during this week so we had to control the amount of effort he could put in. He is of course extremely young and physically fit - a beast - so he was able to put the effort in.

We extended that because we want him to complete a certain amount of minutes (on the pitch) before the season starts.

The Olympics officially kick off this Friday raising more question regarding how serious the Welshman’s injury was, since he was able to return to club duty days before the event gets underway in London.

Tottenham do, however, have some injury concerns as Rafael van der Vaart picked up a groin injury this week and Kyle Walker damaged his ankle. Both are expected to play against Liverpool at the weekend, as is Bale.
