Torres confident of filling Drogba's boots

Saturday 28 July 2012

Chelsea striker Fernando Torres remains confident he can fill the void left by former striker Didier Drogba, and admits he will enjoy the responsibility, according to the Independent.

The Spanish striker endured a tough start to his £50m Chelsea career but he enjoyed a successful end to the season, picking up a Champions League winners medal and lifting the European Championships with Spain in July.

Torres has yet to join his Chelsea team-mates for their pre-season campaign due to his involvement in Euro 2012, where he scored three goals and the 28-year-old feels he can dampen the impact of Drogba’s move to Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua.

Speaking to the club’s website, Torres said: "I like the responsibility and it's a thing I've been doing all my life, Didier did everything for this club, scoring the winning goal in the Champions League was an inspiration for us.”

Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo has yet to add another recognised striker to replace Drogba, however, with the signings of Eden Hazard and Marko Marin, it’s reported that Torres will lead the attack alone this season with the first game of the campaign coming against Wigan Athletic on August 19.

The Spanish striker finished by praising his relationship with Drogba saying: "Our relationship was great and I was talking to him when he decided to leave. He wished me all the best and hopefully one day, Chelsea fans will remember me as they are going to remember him."
