Aquilani set for Liverpool exit as Serie A move near

Monday 30 July 2012

Italian midfielder Alberto Aquilani could finally end his Liverpool career, after the Merseyside club accepted a bid from Serie A’s Fiorentina, according to the BBC.

The 28-year-old had returned to Liverpool for pre-season training after a season long loan at AC Milan having failed to live up to the hype built around him when he moved to the Reds from Roma in 2009 for a reported £20million.

New manager Brendan Rodgers had featured Aquilani in the clubs pre-season tour of America, but with two-years remaining on his contract, the Liverpool hierarchy have decided to accept an undisclosed offer from Fiorentina after Serie A rivals AC Milan decided against making the move permanent.

Spells at Milan and Juventus saw him fail to make a single appearance under former manager Kenny Dalglish and his predecessor Roy Hodgson only played the midfielder twice in his short Liverpool management. The player was signed by Rafael Benitez, who saw the player as a potential replacement for Xabi Alonso.

Aquilani has now left his Liverpool colleagues who are still training in America following games against Toronto FC, Roma and Tottenham Hotspur, and the Italian’s departure could now see Liverpool step up their interest in Swansea City midfielder Joe Allen, according to the report.
