Tottenham linked with Real Madrid defender

Monday 30 July 2012

Tottenham Hotspur could be set to add another central defender with rumoured interest in Real Madrid’s Ricardo Carvalho, who was left out of Jose Mourinho’s pre-season squad, according to the Daily Mail.

The 34-year-old has fallen out of favour at the Bernabeu and has not travelled with the Real Madrid squad to America to begin their pre-season campaign off the back of a La Liga campaign that saw them break Barcelona’s dominance in Spanish football.

Los Merengues had hoped to include Carvalho in a deal to bring Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Luka Modric to Spain, however with Spurs interested in a £40million cash only deal, Jose Mourinho has been forced to rethink his approach to signing Modric.

New Tottenham Head-Coach Andre Villas-Boas has already recruited Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen from Ajax, but with the retirement of Ledley King and the reported impending departure William Gallas, the Portuguese manager could look to fellow Portugal national Carvalho.

Carvalho certainly has Premier League pedigree, following his six-year stint with Chelsea and could search for first-team football after appearing just thirteen times last season for Real Madrid.
