Chelsea forward Sturridge keen to impress with Team GB

Wednesday 01 August 2012

Daniel Sturridge hopes to use his opportunity with Team GB during the London Olympics to convince Chelsea that he should play as a centre-forward, the Daily Telegraph has reported.

Sturridge is most often deployed by the Champions League winners as a winger, a position which the Telegraph insists he does not enjoy playing. But Team GB Coach Stuart Pearce is expected to select Sturridge as his central striker, providing the England international with the platform to banish any thoughts held by Roberto Di Matteo of adding another striker to his squad.

Di Matteo can already call upon Fernando Torres but after the departure of Didier Drogba over the summer, the Blues have been linked with a host of names. They include Porto forward Hulk and Napoli striker Edinson Cavani, who will line up against Team GB for Uruguay.

Romelu Lukaku, the young Belgian striker expected to leave on loan, and former Manchester City youngster Sturridge are currently Torres’ main competition at club level.
