Henry insists Arsenal can stand van Persie sale

Wednesday 01 August 2012

Thierry Henry, the former Arsenal captain and club record goal scorer, has insisted the Gunners could withstand the departure of the current skipper Robin van Persie, who has signalled his intention to leave the club after rejecting a contract extension, the Daily Telegraph has reported.

Henry, who surpassed Ian Wright’s previous goals total to establish a new landmark of 228, added that players will always eventually move on to pastures new. The current New York Red Bulls striker pointed to when he departed Arsenal for Barcelona in 2007, suggesting that in the year after Arsenal were, although only briefly, a stronger side.

Robin will do what he will do and then we’ll see,” Henry said, adding: “When I left, everybody cried, but then the year after they went on a run of being eight points ahead. Everyone comes and goes.

Henry returned to Arsenal for a brief loan spell in January last year, making seven appearances and scoring twice. The Frenchman’s goals came against Leeds United in the FA Cup in his first appearance in an Arsenal shirt for four-and-a-half years, and in his penultimate game for the club, netting a late winner on an away trip to Sunderland.
