Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has insisted that the early rounds of the Europa League in which the Reds are due to play will benefit his side, the Independent has reported. Liverpool travel to Belarus outfit FC Gomel on Thursday evening.

Rodgers said: “We are still finding our fitness and our match fitness, so playing these games helps us. It will give us that edge going into the beginning of this season.” Rodgers added that while he and his players were keen to put on a good show in the Europa League this season, the Premier League is - and has to be - the club’s priority.

Liverpool’s opponents, FC Gomel, ended the Belarusian Premier League in third place last season and won the domestic cup. For their part, Liverpool finished eighth in the Premier League, won the Carling Cup and reached the FA Cup final, where they lost to Chelsea. The cup runs were not enough to save Kenny Dalglish’s job, as the iconic former striker was sacked at the end of the season to make way for Rodgers.
