Vidic to make Man Utd return

Friday 03 August 2012

Nemanja Vidic will be on Manchester United’s tour of Scandinavia Sir Alex Ferguson has said, amid concerns that Red Devils’ captain is still struggling with fitness. The Daily Mail have quoted Ferguson as confirming that Vidic will be available to play but he has also conceded that there are injury concerns with his back four.

He said: “Chris Smalling is out for 10 weeks with his metatarsal operation and Jonny Evans is still just in light training. They are big losses and they will miss the start of the season. Rafael is away but we do have Phil Jones, Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra. That will be the back four.

The 30-year-old Vidic is returning to first team action after twisting his knee in December during a Champions League fixture. After surgery and months on crutches it appears the Serbian is now ready to return to the fray.

However, despite the return of his captain, Ferguson does admit that the team cannot afford any more problems with his back four, saying: “Hopefully we don’t get any more injuries as it would leave me a bit short.

United head to Norway first to play Valerenga from the Norwegian league on Sunday before facing Barcelona in Gothenburg on Wednesday. Their final pre-season fixture comes just a week before the start of the new campaign, away to Bundesliga side Hamburg.
