The Football Association will look to resolve Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand’s improper conduct charge before the start of the Premier League season, according to the Telegraph.

The charge relates to the 33-year-old’s comments regarding Ashley Cole’s testimonial in the trial against John Terry who was accused of racially abusing Rio’s brother Anton Ferdinand, and comments made in reference to a slang term ‘choc ice’ has seen Rio pulled before the FA.

Ferdinand denied the charge against him and will seek a personal hearing to contest the charge further with the players' representatives arguing the player had not instigated the comment, rather he acknowledged the tweet made by another user on the social networking site Twitter.

The FA released a statement saying: “The allegation is that the player acted in a way which was improper and/or brought the game into disrepute by making comments which included a reference to ethnic origin and/or colour and/or race."

FA Chairman David Bernstein has in recent weeks confirmed his intention to crack down on professional players behaviour on twitter with Arsenal’s Emmanuel Frimpong recently charged with improper conduct on Twitter.

Ferdinand is not thought to be called up for England’s friendly against Italy in Switzerland in two weeks which will allow the FA time to investigate the charge further.
