Chelsea manager Robert Di Matteo has informed his players they must improve ahead of the new Premier League season after the latest in a growing line of shoddy pre-season performances, Yahoo Sports has reported.

A strong Chelsea side was beaten 3-1 by Championship outfit Brighton and Hove Albion this weekend, leading Di Matteo to castigate his squad for their lacklustre efforts. While the Italian pointed out that Chelsea have not yet had a full squad to work with this summer, owing to the various international tournaments that have been held, he added he still expected more from the players who have been available.

We haven't had the whole team together yet,” Di Matteo said, adding: “I was expecting more from my team in terms of urgency and movement. I was looking for a better performance than the one we gave today (Saturday).

The side defeated by Brighton, managed by former Chelsea midfielder Gus Poyet, included Petr Cech in goal, a defence containing first choices Branislav Ivanovic, captain John Terry, Gary Cahill and Ashley Cole. The midfield was made up of Raul Meireles, Michael Essien and Frank Lampard, while Eden Hazard and Ramires supporting Fernando Torres in attack.
