Arsenal transfer focus - Van Persie future still uncertain

With only a few weeks of the summer transfer window remaining, Robin van Persie's Arsenal future remains up in the air, with several sources now claiming the Dutchman is set to stay at the Emirates Stadium for the coming Premier League season.

Van Persie, whose current Arsenal contract runs out next summer, has been heavily linked with Manchester United, Manchester City and Juventus over the past couple of months. However, with no deals having been sealed so far this summer, he could be set to stay according to the Daily Mirror.

Reportedly, all three interested parties have made bids in the region of £15m but Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is adamant that van Persie should not be allowed to leave for less than £30m. Such a figure seems far-fetched for a player in the final year of his contract - a fact recognised by the Arsenal board who are willing to accept a compromise between the two figures. But with no increased bid forthcoming, last season's Footballer of the Year could bite the bullet and re-assess his future in January.

Nonetheless, not all the national newspapers agree. According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United will finally end the saga of the summer by sealing a £20m deal for van Persie this week, in tandem with the recruitment of Lucas Moura. Such a double deal would be seen as a tantalising prospect for United fans.

Alternatively, the Independent has reported that van Persie has told Arsenal his preference would be a move to Serie A with Juventus. Should that assertion be accurate, Juventus' recent transfer dealings could be paving the way for an increased bid for him. Milos Krasic, Eljero Elia and Felipe Melo are all on their way out of the Italian champions in deals which could cumulatively raise around £20m - enough to fund an improved bid for Arsenal's star striker.

Wenger has not given up on adding to his squad either. The Daily Mirror has linked him with a move for van Persie's national team mate and Ajax full-back Gregory van der Wiel. The Dutchman would be a shrewd addition with current first choice right-back Bacary Sagna continuing to recover from a broken leg sustained at the end of last season. Sagna is not expected to return to fitness before the end of this month at the earliest.

Newcastle United are also thought to be pursuing van der Wiel and have reportedly tabled a combined offer of £10m for him and left sided full-back Vurnon Anita. Van der Wiel alone is expected to cost around £7m with the 24-year-old entering the final year of his contract at the Dutch champions.
