Suarez to start for Liverpool against Gomel
Luis Suarez will start for Liverpool against Gomel in their Europa League qualifier says Brendan Rodgers. Reported by the Daily Mirror, the new Reds boss has been speaking about the Uruguayan striker.
On Suarez Rodgers said: “Obviously, it’s been difficult for him over the last year but this is a new beginning. I can only judge on what I’ve seen and he’s been a breath of fresh air. He loves his football and his best years are still ahead. At first with Luis, we just never knew what would happen, because I didn’t know the character and personality well enough.”
Suarez had a controversial first full season in the Premier League - he was suspended for eight games after an incident with Patrice Evra in which the attacker used racially abusive language towards the Manchester United defender.
But both manager and player claim that those days are behind him and he’s now ready to start the season. Despite fears that the reception he received during the Olympic would drive him out of English football, Suarez signing a new contract this week at the club.
Rogers added: “You can never be 100 per cent confident until the person sings the paper. So it was a concern, but his heart is here and in the end it was an easy decision for him he loves the club.”
The former Swansea manager also confirmed Suarez would play against Gomel. He said: “He starts. He’s been with Uruguay at the Olympics, so had his pre-season, it just wasn’t with us.”
Liverpool take a 1-0 lead into the second leg of the Europa League qualifier tonight, courtesy of a Stewart Downing goal in Belarus last week.
