Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has compared Luis Suarez to David Beckham in an attempt to show how perceptions in football can change. Speaking before Thursday’s clash with Gomel, the Independent has reported Rodgers as saying his star striker has turned the corner after a season full of controversy and turmoil.

Rogers said: “Looking at the David Beckham scenario a number of years ago, they were burning effigies of him. Now he is king of the world. That is how it can change.

The most important thing is to recognize where you are at and then move forward. Last year was difficult for him [Suarez] but this is a new beginning. The message from me will be concentrate on your football. Everything else will be a hindrance.

Rodgers is referring to Beckham’s incident at the 1998 World Cup where he received a red card for kicking out at Argentina midfielder Diego Simeone. The England midfielder went on to become public enemy No 1and took the majority of the blame for England’s exit.

Beckham however went on to become England captain and one of the nation’s most capped players. Suarez, though still battling his demons from the last campaign, will hope positive performances can help put his negative behaviour behind him as he continues his Liverpool career.
