Borini gets Rodgers off to a winning home start as Liverpool progress in Europa League

Friday 10 August 2012

Brendan Rodgers' first match at Anfield went smoothly as Liverpool safely negotiated a passage past FC Gomel and into the next round of the Europa League, the BBC has reported. New signing Fabio Borini was amongst the goals.

Leading 1-0 from the first leg Liverpool added three more goals to their advantage, including a debut effort from Italian striker Borini. Captain Steven Gerrard and right-back Glen Johnson netted the rest to record a 4-0 aggregate victory. Swansea midfielder Joe Allen, a transfer target for Rodgers, watched the match from the director’s box.

Rodgers named a strong side, including a return to action for Lucas Leiva, who had previously been missing since December through injury. The Brazil midfielder entered an impressive showing, matched by the partnership of Borini and Luis Suarez, who the BBC claim were quick to find a compatible wavelength.

The draw for the next stage of the competition is set to take place on Friday.
