Tottenham dealt Damiao blow

Saturday 11 August 2012

Tottenham have been dealt a huge blow in their pursuit of Leandro Damaio after the Internacional president, Giovanni Luigi, slapped a £47 million price tag on the Brazilian.

Reported by ESPN, Luigi has labelled the transfer ‘very hard’ after he publicly told Spurs that they must cough up a hefty amount of money if they want to strike a deal for the 22-year-old. He said:

“I think it’s very hard for the transfer to happen unless Tottenham pay the €60 million (£47m) buyout fee that is included in his contract. Leandroa Damiao has four more years on his contract. He is a very well paid player and has nothing to complain about. And we don’t need to sell. We are a rich club with an enviable structure.”

This bad news comes in a summer of transfer woes for the North London side after a deal for Emmanuel Adebayor fell through and another transfer request was made by Luka Modric.

Adebayor was expected to sign much earlier in the summer after a fee ranging from £4 to £8 million was agreed with Manchester City, but the former Togo international made demands regarding receiving some or all of the transfer fee with both clubs deciding to break the deal leaving the striker in Manchester.

Tottenham now have a decision on their hands, they either open up new options, return to Adebayor or find £47 million for the Brazilian striker. Should Real Madrid return with the requested £40 million for Modric, the deal for Leandro could go through.
