Sunderland eye Defoe move

Saturday 11 August 2012

Martin O’Neill is keeping a close eye on Jermain Defoe with speculation mounting that the Tottenham striker has grown tired of his time at the club and is looking to play his football elsewhere.

According to the Daily Mail, Spurs will let the 29-year-old go but only after they complete deals for two more strikers.

The paper suggests that O’Neill is ready to seal a £15 million deal for Steven Fletcher as well as weighing up offers for Aiden McGeady of Spartak Moscow and Blackburn’s Scott Dann.

Defoe has a seriously strong goal scoring record in the Premier League, netting 36 goals in 89 games over the last four seasons alone. But he has consistently found himself on the bench at White Hart Lane and with the departure of mentor Harry Redknapp earlier on this summer the striker wants to play his trade elsewhere.

Tottenham are said to be closing in on deal concerning Emmanuel Adebayor but a deal for Leandro Damiao seems to have broken down after a £47 million price tag was attached to the 22-year-old.
