Man Utd's Rooney eager to start new Premier League season
Wayne Rooney is ready for the new season and the challenge of bringing the Premier League back to Old Trafford. Reported by Yahoo, the England striker has been speaking about the new season and what he and his teammates have learned from their last campaign in which they lost out of the title in the final minutes of the final game.
Rooney said: “Obviously [last season] isn’t something you want to look back on, when we’ve won leagues in the past we’ve looked forward to the upcoming season and if we haven’t wont it then we’ve been looking forward to the season coming up. It’s a big disappointment but we have to move on.”
The 25-year-old was speaking after scoring in Manchester United’s final pre-season fixture against Hannover, and having had time to play with the new signings the striker is confident that they will make a big impact on the English top flight, but he is also keeping faith in the youth academy products.
He said: “I played with Kagawa and Tom Cleverley in there as well and the three of us linked up really well I thought, at times anyway. [Cleverley] was a big miss for us last season. Obviously now with the Olympics he’s up to speed, he’s got his fitness and he will be an important player for us this season.”
And on the new Japanese signing, Rooney said: “Kagawa’s been great. He’s a great signing for us and I’m looking forward to playing with him in the season.”
United kick off their campaign away to Everton on the first Monday night game of the season. In the same fixture last season United strolled to a 1-0 win, but the reverse at Old Trafford ended in a 4-4 draw that dented the home side’s title aspirations.
