Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe will look to leave the club if he is forced to play second fiddle to a new striker, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Defoe spent most of last season as back-up to the on-loan Emmanuel Adebayor and with Tottenham still seeking a permanent deal for the Manchester City player, Defoe has warned Spurs Head Coach Andre Villas-Boas that he is not prepared to sit on the bench next season.

The Mirror adds that Defoe is wanted by a host of Premier League clubs, including Sunderland, Queens Park Rangers and Reading. For his part, the England striker has admitted he does not want to play for anyone but Tottenham, but at the same time, would not accept another season as second choice.

Defoe said: “Everyone knows how much I love Tottenham. Everybody knows that they are the club I want to play for. But last season was heartbreaking for me in terms of putting my body on the line, being prepared to give everything for the club and not getting a game.

With two years remaining on his current contract Defoe, 29, added that he must consider what is best for his future if a new deal is put on the table. As yet, however, Tottenham have not opened contract talks with the former West Ham forward, and the Mirror speculate any move out of White Hart Lane would have to wait until Adebayor or Leandro Damiao have come the opposite direction.
