Man City must win the Champions League, insists Yaya Toure

Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure has insisted the club must win the Champions League soon if they are to be considered amongst the biggest clubs in world football, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Toure added that even retaining the Premier League title they won last season will not be enough to make an impression at the very highest levels of the game. He said: “We need to go further and win the Champions League to get the respect of other clubs. We need to win a couple of cups.

City were dumped out of the Champions League at the group stage last year, finishing third in a mini-league also containing eventual runners-up Bayern Munich, Napoli and Villarreal. Toure claimed City suffered in the last campaign because of a lack of tournament experience, but added he feels the know-how is there this season. The Ivory Coast midfielder went so far as to suggest City would win the competition.

Toure is no stranger to success in the Champions League - in 2008/09 Toure was part of the Barcelona team that defeated City’s near neighbours Manchester United in the final.
