Hodgson praises Lampard and Carrick after England win

Thursday 16 August 2012

England manager Roy Hodgson has praised midfielders Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick for their contribution to the national team’s 2-1 win over Italy, the BBC has reported.

The pair started the match in the centre of midfield with Carrick’s Manchester United teammate Tom Cleverley, who was tasked with providing the main support to lone striker Andy Carroll. Both players were missing at Euro 2012 - Chelsea star Lampard through injury while Carrick asked not to be picked if he was not likely to start. However, the former Tottenham Hotspur player reversed his stance ahead of the new season to make his first international appearance since 2010.

When asked about the difference Lampard and Carrick could have made to England during their time in Poland and Ukraine, Hodgson said: “When you miss players like Lampard and Carrick because they are not available you are maybe going to regret it because of the quality they bring.” The former West Bromwich Albion and Liverpool manager added that he felt England deserved their victory on the balance of 90 minutes’ play.
