Torres wants to thank Chelsea fans with second Champions League win
Fernando Torres has admitted there were times last season that he was concerned his £50m move to Stamford Bridge was a mistake, but has attributed the overcoming of this feeling in a large part to the Chelsea fans. Reported by ESPN, the Spanish striker was speaking ahead of the new Premier League season, which kicks off this weekend.
Speaking on his first full season in London, he said: “The season was not for me, it was for others. Chelsea won the FA Cup but I didn’t play the semi-final or the final. I didn’t taste anything.
“I feel I participated a bit more in the Champions League but even so it was not the Champions League I wanted to win not like that. I want to win another Champions League and in a different way.”
The 28-year-old is referring to a point he made earlier in the summer in which he wanted to play a bigger role in helping his team win Europe’s top competition.
The Spanish striker did play six times in the successful FA Cup run, scoring twice, as well as making 14 appearances in the Champions League, contributing 3 goals including a strike in the semi-final against Barcelona in the dying minutes.
He admitted that the fans surprised him and made his mentality change, adding: “The fans helped me a lot - and you don’t understand why. You come from outside and you have played well in this league and, with the Spanish mentality, the first who should have turned against you are the fans. You are not living up to expectations but they still support you. These people are special.”
It is the support that Torres received that he wishes to repay. He adds: “At time I was thinking ‘I will sit here on the bench, I won’t make any noise, I don’t even want to play.’ But they are demanding that you jump on the pitch and play. They lifted my spirits so many times.”
“Not even my team-mates succeeded in doing that in this way. Whatever I do from now on will be for the fans. That is why I want to win another Champions League. For them.”
