Chelsea boss Di Matteo hails Hazard’s Premier League bow

Monday 20 August 2012

Roberto Di Matteo has praised the first Premier League appearance of Eden Hazard after the Belgium midfielder inspired Chelsea to a 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic, Press Association has reported.

Hazard’s impact was felt within a few minutes as a deft turn allowed him the time and space to play in Branislav Ivanovic, the right-back who was surging forward on a Chelsea counter-attack. Ivanovic duly opened the scoring before Hazard won a penalty only a few minutes later. The spot kick was converted by Frank Lampard.

Di Matteo was effusive in his praise for Hazard after the match. The Italian said: “He showed all his quality today, he was outstanding. He combined very well with his team-mates, was a threat, exactly what we were looking for.

Hazard lined up in an attacking midfield trio with Spain international Juan Mata and Ryan Bertrand, who is more often seen as a left-back. The three were in support of lone striker Fernando Torres. Hazard did not complete the match, as Di Matteo withdrew him in favour of fellow new signing Oscar with just over an hour of the match played.
