Cazorla hopes to see van Persie replacement at Arsenal

Monday 20 August 2012

Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla has admitted he hopes Arsene Wenger replaces Robin van Persie and Alex Song before the close of the transfer window, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Cazorla made his Gunners debut in the 0-0 draw with Sunderland on Saturday, the club’s first outing since selling van Persie to Manchester United. The match was played the day before it was confirmed Song was headed for Barcelona.

The Spain international is said to have impressed supporters with his performance despite the disappointing result, with the Mirror claiming Cazorla was Arsenal’s most dangerous attacking player. Cazorla tested Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet early in the match and carved out arguably the best opportunity of the game when he played in Olivier Giroud late on, only for Giroud to screw his short wide.

Cazorla, who admitted to enjoying his first taste of Premier League football despite the unsatisfactory outcome, revealed he would like Wenger to delve further into the transfer market before the end of the month.

He said: “It’s clear that Van Persie is a great player and obviously we would all have preferred it if he had stayed. Song has gone as well and there are still 10 days left in the transfer market. I do not know if we will sign anyone but obviously it’s important to replace players like that because they were so important for the team.
