Man Utd boss Ferguson blames Everton defeat on lack of cutting edge
Sir Alex Ferguson has said his Manchester United team were beaten by Everton because the Red Devils lacked the incision to make the most of their possession, the Guardian has reported.
A Marouane Fellaini goal was enough to give David Moyes’ side victory in their opening Premier League game of the season as United, starting with Wayne Rooney, Shinji Kagawa, Danny Welbeck and Luis Nani, struggled to break down a dogged Everton defence.
Robin van Persie started the match as a substitute and was introduced with around 20 minutes remaining, but the presence of the former Arsenal captain and England winger Ashley Young, who was also introduced, was not enough to overcome a resolute home side.
Everton utilised the power of Fellaini to build many of their attacks and while Ferguson believes his side coped well with the Belgian, he was less impressed with the lack of a cutting edge from United’s own forwards. He said: “But we had the possession and made some great openings without actually finishing it. We were a wee bit [disappointing] in terms of finishing off the approach play we had…On another day we would have won the match.”
