Chelsea youngster McEachran joins Middlesbrough

Tuesday 21 August 2012

Chelsea have loaned young midfielder Josh McEachcran to Championship side Middlesbrough in an effort to give the teenage playmaker a taste of regular first team football, the Guardian has reported.

The 19-year-old could make his debut as early as Tuesday evening when Tony Mowbray’s side take on Burnley at the Riverside Stadium. The season-long loan deal was confirmed by both Chelsea and Middlesbrough on Monday.

McEachran was named Chelsea’s young player of the year for the 2010-11 season but last year struggled to make an impression, either at Stamford Bridge or Swansea City, who he joined on loan in January. McEachran made just five appearances for the Welsh side, starting only twice.

Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo praised McEachran as a potential star of the future but added that his development has thus far not moved on as quickly as would have been hoped, something the loan switch to ‘Boro is intended to change.
