Manchester United could be about to launch a surprise move for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rafael van der Vaart as Sir Alex Ferguson searches for a creative player to feed the likes of Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie, the Daily Mail has reported.

Van der Vaart has been rumoured to be on the verge of leaving Spurs throughout the summer after it was reported the Netherlands international’s former team, Bundesliga side Hamburg, were interested in bringing the playmaker back to Germany. The Mail however claims the prospect of that move has died down.

The arrival of Gylfi Sigurdsson at Tottenham has nevertheless threatened to leave van der Vaart on the sidelines under Andre Villas-Boas. Ferguson is said to be keen to exploit the uncertainty with a move for the former Real Madrid player, who will be asked to act as United’s creative inspiration and ease the pressure on Tom Cleverley.

Ferguson is thought to see Cleverley as a long-term part of the United side but van der Vaart would be a more immediate answer to the question of how to get the best out of Rooney and van Persie.
