Assou-Ekotto reveals surprise over sacking of Redknapp at Tottenham

Monday 27 August 2012

Tottenham Hotspur defender Benoit Assou-Ekotto has admitted he was surprised Harry Redknapp was sacked after taking the club to fourth in the Premier League last season, with the full-back non-committal over the start made by his successor, Andre Villas-Boas, the Daily Telegraph has reported.

Villas-Boas is still waiting for his first win as Spurs boss, having lost 2-1 to Newcastle United on the opening day of the season and draw 1-1 with West Bromwich Albion in his first home match in charge. Assou-Ekotto had put Tottenham in front but James Morrison netted a late equaliser for Steve Clarke’s side.

Asked about Redknapp, Assou-Ekotto said he did not think many managers would find themselves out of work after delivering a fourth place finish. He added: “[I was] very surprised because I don’t think there are a lot of managers who finished fourth and they are sacked.” The Cameroonian went on to say that he was happy playing under Villas-Boas at the moment as the Portuguese is picking him, suggesting - tongue-in-cheek perhaps - that he would say something different if he was dropped to the bench.
