Di Matteo wants to win second Super Cup with Chelsea

Monday 27 August 2012

Roberto Di Matteo has promised that he is not looking at the Super Cup as a friendly but a trophy that he and his side want to win. Reported in the Daily Mail, the Chelsea manager has spoken of the desire within his squad to win the competition as well as the importance of fielding his strongest side.

He said: “We are happy we are going into the Super Cup final with three wins and everybody fit and hopefully we can win another international trophy for this football club. (I will take it) very seriously. It is not a friendly. It is a European trophy that we want to win. (I will) not be resting people.

Di Matteo will be hoping to win Chelsea’s second Super Cup trophy after the club won it back in 1998 following their Cup Winners’ Cup win. The Blues won the competition when the current manager played for the team under Gianluca Vialli, however he was substituted for Gus Poyet who would eventually score the winner in a 1-0 victory against Real Madrid.

This time around they play the other Madrid side, Atletico, who won the Europa League against Athletic Bilbao 3-0 - their second time winning the competition in three years. The last came after beating Fulham in the final.

John Terry will miss the game through suspension but David Luiz is expected to be fit following a bang to the head in Saturday’s 2-0 win against Newcastle. Frank Lampard is also expected to feature.

On leaving Lampard out of Saturday’s game, Di Matteo said: “He played in the Community Shield, he went with England and played and then played against Wigan and Reading. He is very important to us but, like I said, I utilized the squad. I had a fresher player that played (on Saturday) and this is important that we do utilize everybody because we played three games in six days.

The Super Cup takes place on Friday in Monaco.
