Dembele move pushes van der Vaart towards Tottenham exit

Wednesday 29 August 2012

Tottenham Hotspur’s potential signing of Moussa Dembele could hasten the end of Rafael van der Vaart’s career at White Hart Lane, the Guardian has reported, as the Netherlands international remains a target for former club Hamburg of the Bundesliga.

The Guardian adds that the last few days of the transfer window are likely to be hectic ones for Spurs, with a string of players likely to arrive following the sale of Luka Modric to Real Madrid. Lyon goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, Shakhtar Donetsk attacking midfielder Willian and Dembele are expected to be among the names arriving, but van der Vaart could be a high-profile departure as Andre Villas-Boas continues to shape his squad.

Negotiations between Tottenham and Hamburg are said to be underway as the 29-year-old van der Vaart considers a return to the club he played for between 2005 and 2008. Van der Vaart is also said to still be a popular figure with the club’s supporters.

Spurs had hoped to receive a fee in the region of £14m for van der Vaart but it is more likely to be closer to £10m, with much of the money coming from Hamburg’s third party investor, Klaus-Michel Kuhne.
