Fenerbahce target Chelsea pair Meireles and Essien

Wednesday 29 August 2012

Turkish giants Fenerbahce could turn to Chelsea in an effort to bolster their squad before the close of the transfer window as the Daily Mail reports midfielders Michael Essien and Raul Meireles figure prominently on the club’s wanted list.

A fee of £8m has been mooted for Ghana international Essien while Fener also enquired about the availability of Portugal midfielder Meireles. The Mail suggests Chelsea would be open to the moves as they seek to recoup some of the millions they have spent this summer on the likes of Eden Hazard and Oscar.

Any deal may be dependent on Fenerbahce reaching the group stage of the Champions League, however. Fener meet Spartak Moscow in the play-off second-leg on Wednesday evening and go into the game trailing 2-1 from the first-leg. However, the return match is to be played in Turkey and Fener have a vital away goal, scored by former Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt.
