Man Utd winger Young out of England squad

Friday 31 August 2012

England manager Roy Hodgson is facing an injury headache after Manchester United winger Ashley Young pulled out of the squad to play Moldova and Ukraine with a knee problem, the Independent has reported.

Young picked up the injury during Manchester United’s 3-2 win over Fulham in the Premier League last weekend and had to be substituted during the match. The former Aston Villa player has been a regular feature in Hodgson’s team during the former West Bromwich Albion boss’ short England tenure.

While Young’s injury is not thought to be serious the chances of the ex-Aston Villa midfielder being fit to play again in a week’s time, when England play the first of their World Cup qualifiers, are said to be very slim indeed. Moldova provide the opposition for the first of the double-header, with England travelling to Chisinau for the contest.

Wayne Rooney is also absent through injury while Andy Carroll has retained his place in the side despite having fallen down the pecking order at Liverpool, although Carroll has completed a loan move to West Ham since the travelling party was confirmed.
