QPR Focus - League Cup could kickstart Hoops’ season

A convincing 3-0 win against League One side Walsall was enough to convince QPR manager Mark Hughes that his side is improving after their poor start to the Premier League campaign.

The League Cup second round tie saw the return of Ali Faurlin, who missed most of last season’s survival campaign. The Argentinian midfielder played the full 90 minutes against Walsall and is aleady starting to impress.

Hughes said: “I think psychologically he needed to get over that hurdle of completing 90 minutes, which he did very, very well I felt.

We certainly missed his guile on occasions. It was a really good performance from him so we’re all delighted.”

The 26 year old was an instrumental player in QPR’s Championship winning season under previous manager Neil Warnock, pulling the strings in midfield along with the charismatic Adel Taarabt.

With 90 minutes under his belt it’s important Faurlin now pushes for a place in Hughes’ starting line up in the upcoming Premier League fixtures. The former Instituto player is very well liked at QPR, with former skipper Joey Barton naming him as one of the best young players he’s played with. With a glossy left foot in his possession he showed in the Championship he has the ability to spray passes across the field. It will be interesting to see if he now steps up and shows his skills on the world’s biggest stage.

Another return from injury was Kieron Dyer, playing the last 30 minutes in the midweek cup win. Dyer, a player who has struggled immensely in past few seasons with hamstrings and foot ligament injuries, as well as the horrific broken leg that put his career in doubt on his West Ham debut only 3 years ago.

Hughes commented: ”It was good to see Kieron as well. I thought he gave us energy and gave us a little cameo of what he can offer to us this year. Hopefully he is back to somewhere near his best.

It’s clear Hughes is an admirer of the former West Ham and Newcastle midfielder and is expecting big things from his this season. With Dyer being a versatile midfielder, he will no doubt start as cover for new signings Park Ji Sung and Junior Hoilett, looking for a chance to come in and stake a place for a starting berth.

More movement is expected at Loftus Road before the close of the transfer window, which closes on Friday evening, with the arrival of goalkeeper Julio Cesar, looking to steal the No. 1 jersey from the clutches of newly signed Robert Green, making the 3-0 Walsall win the highlight of Green’s short career as QPR number one.

On the way out will most certainly be the outspoken Barton, who’s heart seems set on a move to Marseille’s Velodrome Stadium. Other players Jay Bothroyd, DJ Campbell, Luke Young and Rob Hulse have all been refused squad numbers and have featured in most of the reserve games so far.

Owner Tony Fernandes will be looking to remove these players from the wage budget, as well as trying to find clubs that will pay a transfer fee, as many of the players that have left under the Fernandes era have all left for free, the QPR owner is still digging into his pockets to find funds for Hughes to improve his squad.
