Arsenal line-up Essien loan move

Friday 31 August 2012

Arsenal are looking to feature once again in a surprising transfer story but this time they are on the receiving end.

According to the Daily Mail, Arsene Wenger is lining up a loan move for Michael Essien with the Chelsea midfielder currently of the peripheries of the first team at Stamford Bridge.

The Ghanaian has failed to regain is place in the Chelsea first eleven after suffering two career threatening knee injuries in back to back seasons and it appears now Roberto Di Matteo and co may be willing to cut their losses and let the player go, allowing him the chance to reignite his career.

Since signing for the Blues in 2005, the 29-year-old has played 243 games for the club in all competitions and despite playing a holding role in midfield has managed 25 goals in that time.

Should the Gunners make this deal it would be the second time in successive transfer windows they had loaned a player from their London rivals on deadline day - last year Yossi Benayoun made the switch from Chelsea to Arsenal.
