Chelsea v Atletico Madrid - Super Cup preview and team news
This year’s annual Super Cup contest is the last to be played in Monaco and the Stade Louis II is in line to witness an entertaining contest between two clubs who have started the season in scintillating form.
Champions League winners Chelsea have stormed out of the blocks in the Premier League with three straight victories - the catalyst undoubtedly being Eden Hazard. The young Belgian has certainly lived up to his large transfer fee, providing one goal and six assists from Chelsea’s eight goals overall so far this season. Hazard’s sparkling displays have also seemingly brought Fernando Torres to somewhere near his old self and “El Nino” is almost certain to line up tonight against his boyhood club.
Similarly, Atletico have had an impressive start to La Liga and in Radamel Falcao, an apparent Chelsea target, boast one of the world’s most feared strikers. Supplied by the similarly feted Arda Turan, Falcao hit a hat trick in Atletico’s 4-0 win over a troubled Athletic Bilbao on the weekend and is sure to be relishing the opportunity to make his mark on his potential suitors.
Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo says he will not rest players but will have to make do without skipper John Terry, who is suspended for that infamous red card against Barcelona in last season’s Champions League semi final. Debuts may be given to new signings Cesar Azpilicueta, Victor Moses and Marko Marin although all are likely to come from the bench. Frank Lampard should back into midfield from the weekend with Ryan Bertrand keeping his place on the left of midfield.
Atletico manager Diego Simeone looks set to name an unchanged side from the weekend, with on-loan Chelsea goalkeeper Thibualt Courtois eligible to play against his employers.
