Following their 2-0 loss to Arsenal this afternoon, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has admitted that losing Andy Carroll would not have been part of his plans if he had thought the possibility of not signing another attacker before the window closed was plausible.

Speaking to ESPN following the game, Rodgers conceded that his team lacked options further up the field and refused to rule out completely bringing Michael Owen back to the club. When asked about the two strikers he said:

“Andy is gone. That’s the reality of it. We all know we need reinforcements but the window is shut so we can’t do anything about it. We have got what we have got.”

On Owen he added: “Any player that I believe can improve the squad I will look at. We have got a very, very small squad with some very young players in it. So I can’t say no.”

Owen left Liverpool in 2004 for Real Madrid and has since played for rivals such as Newcastle and Manchester United. In his time at Anfield he scored 118 goals in 216 games earning himself legend status at the club as well as winning the Ballon D’or in 2001.

In his post match analysis with Sky Sports, Rodgers refused to blame his style or the commitment from his players following just 1 point from three games, he said:

“It’s absolutely nothing to do with style. The style and system is irrelevant, it’s about decision making and keeping the ball. There is still a long way to go. It’s nothing to do with style, we just need to take more care with the ball. Across the team that’s something which will come.

“I can’t question the players’ attitude, their commitment has been brilliant since I’ve come in and today they’ve given everything.”

Liverpool will be hoping that the upcoming international break will give them a well needed break from league action, giving them time to address the problems within the squad so that they can turn their worst start since 2003 into something more positive.

Their first game after the break is at the Stadium of Light against Sunderland however the tough fixtures keep coming with Manchester United coming to Anfield the following week – by the end of September Liverpool will have played three of last season’s top four.
