Wenger hails Arsenal midfielder Diaby after Liverpool win

Monday 03 September 2012

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has praised Abou Diaby for his performance in the Gunners’ victory over Liverpool on Sunday, adding that he felt there was still more to come from the France international, the Daily Telegraph has reported.

Wenger said: “You can see that Diaby is massive for us. He is a tremendous football player who has everything you want in midfield.” The win at Anfield was the first time in over a year that Diaby has played a full 90 minutes after suffering a great deal with hamstring, groin and calf injuries, with the 26-year-old making just five appearances last season.

However, Wenger added that not only did Diaby impress with his performance, but also his new-found fitness. “Now he looks, physically, in a good shape. There is more to come from him, but what he has shown today is very good.” Wenger revealed that through pre-season Arsenal took a simple approach to Diaby, playing him for no more than 45 minutes every three days.

Diaby has been included in the France squad for their World Cup qualifying matches against Finland on Friday and Belarus next week. Wenger remarked that he hoped Diaby returned to Arsenal in one piece after his international excursion, as he will have to do a lot of travelling as well as potentially playing for Les Bleus.
