Podolski eyes Arsenal title challenge

Lukas Podolski believes Arsenal have what it takes to challenge for the Premier League title this season, ESPN has reported.

The Germany international scored his first goal for the Gunners in the weekend’s 2-0 win over Liverpool at Anfield - a strike that was also Arsenal’s first of the Premier League season after two consecutive goalless draws with Sunderland and Stoke City. Santi Cazorla, another new arrival at the club, added the second, his first in English football.

Podolski believes that there are a number of clubs capable of winning the title in England, of which Arsenal are one, but added that to do so requires maintaining a high level of performance.

He said: “In the Premier League, you have five or six teams who want the title. We are one of those and must fight for it. We have 35 matches more and must play in all of them like we did at Liverpool.

Podolski added that after the side dropped points against both Sunderland and Stoke they were braced for the criticism that came their way, but also that after a career spent playing at the highest level, it was no more than he expected.
