Berbatov criticises Ferguson for treatment at Man Utd

Tuesday 04 September 2012

Days after completing his move away from Manchester United, new Fulham signing Dimitar Berbatov has criticised his treatment at Old Trafford and in particular by Sir Alex Ferguson, the Daily Telegraph has reported.

Berbatov moved to United from Tottenham Hotspur for a fee of more than £30m in 2008, but last year found himself relegated to being the club’s fifth-choice striker. The Bulgarian was languishing behind Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez, Danny Welbeck and, the newspaper adds, Michael Owen, after Owen was picked as one of the substitutes for the 2011 Champions League final ahead of Berbatov.

Ferguson said after the deal to sell Berbatov to Fulham was in the offing that the striker was suffering because of a change in United’s style of play, as the club moved towards a quicker, counter-attacking side, incompatible with Berbatov’s languid approach.

Berbatov however was not satisfied with this explanation, adding that he spoke to Ferguson many times to see if there was any way he could break into the team. As it transpired there was not, with Berbatov claiming he should have left after he was left out of the Champions League final squad. He added: “ I don’t think I deserved such treatment at United - not playing [regularly] in the last year.

I went more than 10, probably 15, times to ask the coach if they need me, and every time I was told that I’m an important player and should not leave, but then again I was not in the team.
