Chelsea sell midfielder Meireles to Fenerbahce

Tuesday 04 September 2012

Raul Meireles has left Chelsea for Fenerbahce, the Daily Telegraph has reported, a year after moving to Stamford Bridge from Liverpool - where he also spent only 12 months. The Portugal international’s transfer to Turkey will see Fener pay in the region of £8m.

The newspaper adds that Meireles is just the latest in a long line of departures from the Champions League winners - the 29th of the summer, but Meireles is in fact the first to leave for a transfer fee. The former Porto player moved to Chelsea from Premier League rivals Liverpool for £12m in 2011.

Meireles was an Andre Villas-Boas signing - the two had worked together at Porto before Meireles moved to Liverpool - but after Villas-Boas was sacked in March, Meireles found himself on the periphery of Roberto Di Matteo’s squad. He did however feature in the club’s successful Champions League campaign, with the Telegraph noting he was particularly impressive in the semi-final against Barcelona.
